Forever Nameless

from the putrid mud
from the burning plains
all gaze upward
crane their necks

the dragons circle
unseen above the clouds
digital, white and silver
with bloodstained beaks

cowering in revelry below
offerings to the majestic
living in awe and wonder
of the mythical rulers

a reign in flame
terror of the endless burning
faces down in pools of sludge
escaping a fate at the pyre

towers of bodies
scrawling, gasping for air
black lungs coughing
sucking down the acrid smoke

prayers to the Gods of man
a knight to slay the beasts
a fairytale to tell the children
shards of diamond falling from heaven

champions and heroes rise
against the glitter in the skies
doing battle with their shadows
to ultimately be rent asunder

only mere flesh collateral
a game amongst the snakes
wings and fangs and fire
clash with wanton abandon

the rain of terror continues
to fall upon the graves
turning bodies new and old
forever nameless into dust
